About This Service

What is Pediatric Respiratory Therapy?

Respiratory therapy is a specialized healthcare discipline focused on the assessment, treatment, and management of breathing disorders and cardiopulmonary conditions. For children with complex medical needs, respiratory therapy may involve managing artificial airways (tracheostomies), operating and monitoring mechanical ventilators, administering inhaled medications through nebulizers or metered-dose inhalers, performing chest physiotherapy to clear secretions, and monitoring oxygen saturation levels throughout the day.

At Elite PPEC, our respiratory therapists are integral members of the care team for children who are technology-dependent. Many of our patients arrive each day with tracheostomy tubes that require regular suctioning, cuff management, and stoma care. Others depend on ventilators that must be carefully monitored and adjusted to maintain adequate breathing support. Our RTs perform these critical tasks with the precision and compassion that medically fragile children deserve.

Beyond acute management, our respiratory therapists work toward long-term goals such as ventilator weaning, tracheostomy decannulation readiness, and improving a child's respiratory endurance so they can participate more fully in therapies, play, and developmental activities.

Who We Help

Who Benefits from Respiratory Therapy?

Respiratory therapy at Elite PPEC serves children from birth to age 20 who have conditions affecting their ability to breathe independently. This includes children born prematurely who developed bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a chronic lung condition caused by prolonged mechanical ventilation in the NICU. Children with neuromuscular conditions like spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) or muscular dystrophy may have progressive respiratory muscle weakness that requires ventilatory support.

Children with airway anomalies such as tracheomalacia, subglottic stenosis, or laryngeal clefts may require tracheostomies and ongoing respiratory management. Those with severe cerebral palsy often experience poor cough reflexes and secretion management difficulties that lead to recurrent pneumonia without proper respiratory care. Children with chronic conditions like cystic fibrosis or severe asthma also benefit from consistent respiratory therapy to maintain lung function and prevent hospitalizations.

Our Method

Our Approach to Respiratory Therapy

Our respiratory therapy program begins with a comprehensive respiratory assessment that includes evaluation of the child's breathing pattern, lung sounds, oxygen saturation, work of breathing, secretion volume and character, and current equipment settings. For ventilator-dependent children, we review ventilator parameters, waveforms, and compliance data to optimize settings for comfort and growth.

Daily respiratory care at Elite PPEC includes scheduled treatments such as nebulizer administration (albuterol, budesonide, hypertonic saline), chest physiotherapy using percussion, vibration, and postural drainage techniques, and tracheostomy care including inner cannula cleaning, stoma skin assessment, and trach tie changes. Our RTs perform suctioning as needed throughout the day, using clinical judgment to assess secretion volume, color, and consistency as indicators of respiratory health.

For children who are candidates for ventilator weaning, our RTs collaborate with the child's pulmonologist to implement gradual weaning protocols. This may involve decreasing ventilator support during daytime hours while the child is supervised at the PPEC, allowing them to build respiratory endurance in a safe, monitored environment. We track tolerance through continuous pulse oximetry, capnography, and clinical observation, reporting outcomes to the physician team for ongoing plan adjustments.

PPEC Advantage

Benefits of Respiratory Therapy at a PPEC

For technology-dependent children, a PPEC facility like Elite PPEC provides a level of respiratory care that is simply not available in a home setting or standard daycare. Our facility is equipped with backup ventilators, emergency suction equipment, oxygen supply systems, and pulse oximetry monitors at every station. Licensed respiratory therapists are present throughout the day to respond immediately to any change in a child's respiratory status, whether it is increased secretions, a trach obstruction, or a ventilator alarm.

This level of readiness gives parents peace of mind that their child is receiving expert respiratory management while they work or attend to other family responsibilities. Many families of ventilator-dependent children describe the constant vigilance required at home as physically and emotionally exhausting. At Elite PPEC, trained professionals assume this responsibility during the day, allowing parents to rest and recharge while knowing their child is in capable hands.

The integrated care model also means that respiratory therapists communicate directly with the child's nurses, physical therapists, and speech therapists. Before a PT session, the RT can ensure the child's airways are clear and breathing is optimized. During feeding therapy with an SLP, the RT can monitor for signs of aspiration. This seamless coordination reduces the risk of respiratory complications and supports the child's participation in developmental therapies, all covered by Florida Medicaid.
