About This Service

What is Pediatric Music Therapy?

Music therapy is a clinical and evidence-based discipline in which a board-certified music therapist (MT-BC) uses musical interventions to address non-musical goals. Unlike music education, which focuses on teaching musical skills, music therapy harnesses the brain's powerful response to music to facilitate changes in communication, cognition, motor function, emotional regulation, and social interaction.

Neuroscience research has demonstrated that music activates multiple brain regions simultaneously, including areas responsible for language, movement, emotion, and memory. This makes music an extraordinarily effective therapeutic medium for children with neurological conditions. A child who cannot produce spontaneous speech may sing familiar song lyrics fluently. A child with cerebral palsy who struggles with voluntary arm movements may reach for a drum with greater precision when motivated by rhythm.

At Elite PPEC, music therapy sessions may include singing, songwriting, instrument playing (drums, shakers, xylophones, keyboards), movement to music, musical games, and receptive listening. Each activity is carefully designed by the music therapist to target specific therapeutic goals while creating an experience that children genuinely enjoy and look forward to.

Who We Help

Who Benefits from Music Therapy?

Music therapy at Elite PPEC benefits children across nearly every diagnosis we serve. Children with autism spectrum disorder often show a strong affinity for music and respond to musical structure in ways they do not respond to verbal instruction alone. Music therapy can increase vocalization, improve eye contact, enhance joint attention, and reduce anxiety in children on the spectrum.

For children with cerebral palsy or other motor impairments, rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS) has been shown to improve gait patterns, increase range of motion, and enhance coordination. Playing instruments like drums and tambourines encourages bilateral hand use, crossing midline, and graded muscle control. Children with Down syndrome benefit from music therapy's support of speech and language development, as singing slows down the rate of communication and emphasizes pronunciation patterns in a natural, motivating way.

Children in palliative care or facing chronic illness find comfort and emotional relief through music. Receptive music experiences such as listening to calming selections can reduce pain perception, lower heart rate and blood pressure, and provide a sense of peace during difficult medical procedures or transitions.

Our Method

Our Approach to Music Therapy

Our music therapy program begins with an assessment of each child's musical responsiveness, developmental level, communication abilities, motor function, and behavioral patterns. The music therapist identifies which musical elements (tempo, rhythm, melody, dynamics, instrumentation) each child responds to most strongly and uses these preferences as entry points for therapeutic engagement.

Treatment goals are aligned with the child's overall care plan and may include increasing verbal output through call-and- response singing, improving bilateral coordination through drum circles, enhancing social turn-taking through musical games, supporting emotional regulation through structured improvisational music, or reducing procedural anxiety through familiar comfort songs. Our therapists use both structured (therapist-directed) and improvisational (child-led) approaches depending on the child's needs in each session.

Group music therapy sessions at Elite PPEC are especially powerful for building social connections. Children who may struggle with peer interaction in unstructured settings often thrive in a musical group where expectations are clear, participation has built-in structure, and every child can contribute at their own level. The shared experience of making music together creates bonds and builds a sense of community among our patients.

PPEC Advantage

Benefits of Music Therapy at a PPEC

Music therapy at a PPEC like Elite PPEC has distinct advantages over outpatient music therapy sessions. In a traditional clinical setting, a child may attend music therapy once a week for 30 minutes. At our PPEC, music can be integrated into the daily rhythm of care. The music therapist can use greeting songs to ease morning transitions, rhythmic cues to support gait training during physical therapy, and calming music to facilitate rest periods. This pervasive integration amplifies music's therapeutic impact far beyond a single session.

Collaboration with other therapists is another major advantage. When a speech therapist identifies that a child is close to producing a target word, the music therapist can create a song that embeds that word in a melodic phrase, making it easier for the child to produce. When a physical therapist is working on walking endurance, the music therapist can provide live rhythmic accompaniment that naturally regulates the child's pace and motivation. These real-time collaborations produce outcomes that are difficult to replicate in isolated outpatient settings.

Families consistently report that music therapy is one of their child's favorite parts of the day at Elite PPEC. The intrinsic motivation that music provides means children are eager to participate, leading to higher engagement in therapeutic activities and faster progress toward their goals. All music therapy services are fully covered by Florida Medicaid.
